Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluations (Cognitive FCE) Services

At Thrive Therapy, we understand that cognitive abilities are essential for daily functioning, work performance, and overall quality of life. Cognitive impairments—whether due to injury, illness, or medical conditions—can significantly impact an individual’s ability to perform tasks, engage in work activities, or even manage day-to-day responsibilities.

Our Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluations (Cognitive FCEs) provide a comprehensive assessment of cognitive abilities to help determine an individual’s functional capacity, identify cognitive limitations, and guide treatment or rehabilitation plans.

What is a Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluation (Cognitive FCE)?

A Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluation (Cognitive FCE) is a series of standardized tests and assessments designed to evaluate an individual’s cognitive abilities and functional limitations. Unlike traditional Functional Capacity Evaluations, which focus on physical abilities, Cognitive FCEs assess aspects of cognitive function such as memory, attention, concentration, problem-solving, decision-making, and the ability to perform tasks that require mental effort. The results of a Cognitive FCE can help guide decisions related to:

  • Return to work or school
  • Disability assessments
  • Cognitive rehabilitation or therapy needs
  • Work accommodations or job modifications
  • Vocational rehabilitation

Who Might Need a Cognitive FCE?

Cognitive FCEs are essential in a variety of situations, particularly for individuals who are experiencing cognitive difficulties following an injury, illness, or medical condition. Some common reasons you may need a Cognitive FCE include:

  • Post-Injury or Post-Surgery Recovery: After a traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, concussion, or surgery, it’s important to assess cognitive function to determine the extent of recovery and readiness to return to work or other activities.
  • Disability and Workers’ Compensation Claims: A Cognitive FCE is often used in disability claims or workers’ compensation cases to assess cognitive impairments and determine the impact on an individual’s ability to work.
  • Return-to-Work or Return-to-School Assessments: If you or someone you know is struggling to return to work or school after a cognitive impairment, an evaluation can help identify limitations and inform decisions on job accommodations, vocational training, or rehabilitation plans.
  • Cognitive Rehabilitation Planning: A Cognitive FCE helps clinicians develop personalized rehabilitation plans by identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses, allowing for targeted interventions to support recovery.
